French Cup: Bergerac stun Saint-Etienne, Monaco beat Lens

Saint-Etienne’s struggling season took an even worse turn when the top-tier side were knocked out of the Coupe de France 1-0 by amateur side Bergerac.

Fourth-tier Bergerac reached the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time, while six-time Cup winners Saint-Etienne return to their relegation fight.

Les Verts have won a record 10 French league titles but are bottom of the table and this humiliating exit will do nothing to lift morale.

Bergerac striker Romain Escarpit scored in the 76th minute after Saint-Etienne squandered chances, allowing Bergerac to join fellow fourth-tier Versailles in the quarter-finals.

Monaco, a five-time winner and last season’s runner-up, progressed by winning 4-2 at Lens with prolific striker Wissam Ben Yedder scoring twice.

Monaco led 3-0 after 30 minutes with goals from Ben Yedder, Brazilian midfielder Jean Lucas and then winger Sofiane Diop, after a deft counter-attack in which Ben Yedder and Lucas combined superbly to set it up.

Northern Lens showed their usual fighting spirit as they came from behind from two goals through Wesley Said, just before half-time, and fellow striker Arnaud Kalimuendo in the 53rd.

Ben Yedder casually squandered a chance in the 73rd, but Kalimuendo also missed one when he blasted past former Arsenal, Sunderland and Reading goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

Ben Yedder seized his next chance and scored his club-leading 20th goal of the season in the 88th minute after catching a pass from France team-mate Aurélien Tchouameni.

Holders Paris Saint-Germain are at home to Nice for the last place in the quarter-finals. PSG have won the trophy a record 14 times and are aiming to reach their eighth consecutive final.

But Nice coach Christophe Galtier is confident of springing an upset. Last season he guided Lille to the French title and that victory against all odds included a victory at PSG.

PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Nice’s Amine Gouiri have been in good form up front this season.

Mbappe has 19 goals and 13 assists in all competitions and Gouri has also done well for a smaller team going 10-7 overall.
