BREAKING: Former Premier League Star Arrested on Suspicion of Sexual Assault
Former Wolves and Nottingham Forest forward Rafa Mir has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, his current club Valencia have confirmed. The 27-year-old Spanish striker was taken into custody by Spanish Civil Guard officers on Monday night over an alleged sexual assault.
According to Spanish outlet Cadena SAR, Mir did not attend training with Valencia on Monday and was instead transferred to the Valencia Civil Guard headquarters to make a statement before a judge. The report also stated that Mir had been loaned out to Huesca and Sevilla before rejoining Valencia this summer.
Valencia have released a statement confirming the arrest, saying they are "aware" of the situation and will cooperate with the justice system. The Civil Guard spokesperson has also confirmed that a La Liga player was detained in Valencia for an alleged sexual assault against one woman, without disclosing the player’s name.
Mir, who was born in Cartagena, came through Valencia’s youth system before making two La Liga appearances for them. He was part of Wolves’ significant spending spree when they were back in the Championship, with Wanderers spending £2 million to bring him to Molineux in 2018.
After an unsuccessful temporary stint at Nottingham Forest, Mir scored 22 goals in 56 appearances across 18 months on loan with Huesca, convincing Sevilla to spend a fee of up to €16 million to sign him permanently from Wolves. He then rejoined Valencia on a season-long loan deal this summer with a buyout clause of €5 million.
Mir started his side’s first three games of the La Liga season, including a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona, before a cameo as a substitute in the 1-1 draw against Villarreal on Saturday.
The Premier League and football fans around the world are shocked by this news, and we will be keeping a close eye on the situation as more details emerge.
