The Forgotten Liverpool Star who Cost £2m as a Teenager has Embarked on a New Chapter Abroad
Sheyi Ojo, the winger once touted as the next big thing, has signed his 10th club despite never quite living up to the hype. The enigmatic forward has had quite the journey, and after a stint with Cardiff and a loan spell with Belgians Kortrijk, he’s now joined Maribor in Slovenia.
At just 14, Ojo made international headlines when he joined Liverpool for a whopping £2 million. The Milton Keynes native was touted as a super-prospect, and whispers of a potential England team regular began to circulate. However, things weren’t quite as rosy as expected.
Anfield appearances were scarce for Ojo, and most of his 13 matchdays came via loan agreements with Wigan, Wolfs, Fulham, Rangers, Cardiff, Stade de Reims, and Millwall. Speaking of which, did you know that during his eight-year tenure at Liverpool, Ojo made just eight starts in the Premier League? Yeah, it ain’t exactly the most radiant of records.
Fast-track to 2023 – Ojo has now spent the better part of nearly a decade playing for anyone who’d have him! His 258 club appearance tally is decent, given the circumstances, but hey, at least he scores goals – 23 total, to be exact
On the international stage, Ojo did manage some silverware with England at the 2017 World Cup U-20 crown. He featured in some capacity during the tournament.
In a candid interview, Ojo shared what went down before his loan exit to Cardiff: "You know, the main thing was just to get game time. Every time I’ve had a loan out, I’ve played solidly, and there was a spell where I chipped in well. it’s just playing a bagful of games and working through a full season ".
Now, as 27-year-old Ojo embarks on this most recent chapter with Maribor, one can’t help but wonder if finally, he’ll find success and stability.
