Monaco Pull Off the Shock of the Century Against Barcelona
Last night’s Champions League clash between Monaco and Barcelona was one for the ages, with the French side pulling off a stunning 2-1 victory over the Catalan giants. And the icing on the cake? A heartwarming post-match interview between Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche and none other than Thierry Henry.
The new-look Champions League has brought about some exciting changes, with all 36 teams playing eight fixtures each before the top eight teams automatically qualify for the last 16 phase. Those who finish between ninth and 24th will then compete in the play-offs, while the 12 teams that finish below that mark will be eliminated.
But back to the game at hand, which saw Monaco take an early lead through Akliouche’s 16th-minute goal. Barca responded with a leveller just before the break, but it was the hosts who took the lead for good through teenage substitute George Ilenikhena’s strike.
The big talking point of the night, however, was Henry’s chat with Akliouche, who was coached by the Arsenal legend at the Paris Olympics this summer. The two were all smiles as they spoke about Akliouche’s goal, his season targets, and even the French national team’s World Cup campaign.
"What did you feel when you scored your goal?" Henry asked, to which Akliouche replied: "It was a pleasure, it was a joy to score at home against Barcelona, this was my first game in the Champions League, so this is a magical moment to live this."
When asked about Monaco’s goals for the season, Akliouche was ambitious: "We are looking to put Monaco on the map, to be playing in the Champions League every year and why not to go ahead and win this competition. That is our goal and it’s a pleasure to be there."
The interview ended with Henry jokingly asking Akliouche if he could score 10 goals this season, to which the young forward responded: "Yes, I think that’s achievable. In two matches a week, that’s definitely doable, I want to be decisive for the team."

But what was truly special about this interview was the affection and respect shown between Henry and Akliouche. As the two said their goodbyes, they couldn’t help but express their gratitude for the time they spent together at the Olympics, with Akliouche praising Henry’s clear vision and leadership.
The post-match chat has left fans in awe, with many taking to social media to praise the beautiful game. "This is so beautiful," wrote one fan, while another quipped: "The beautiful game."
