Wrexham’s Hollywood Glamour Comes at a Price
Wrexham’s promotion to League One has brought a new level of excitement to the club, and with their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the helm, expectations are high. But, it seems that the glamour of the big time has come at a cost for fans, as Leyton Orient’s match ticket prices have sparked a heated reaction.
For their League One opener at Brisbane Road on September 28th, Wrexham will be priced as Category AA opposition, alongside Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic. This means that adult matchday tickets in the East Stand will cost a whopping £37. No surprise, then, that fans are venting their frustration on social media.
"We’ve seen Bolton do it too, it’s ridiculous. Teams moan about us, but don’t mind exploiting their own fans as well as ours when we play them," said one fan. Another called out the pricing structure, saying: "There’s a huge problem with this type of thing, it shouldn’t be allowed. Wrexham fans could end up paying hundreds more than other clubs’ fans to go to the same games over a season."
Leyton Orient CEO Mark Devlin defended the pricing, stating that it had been "carefully considered" to balance competition on the pitch with affordability for fans. He acknowledged that there would be increases to ticket prices, citing higher operational costs, including matchday staffing and utilities. Devlin emphasized that all revenue generated goes back into the club, investing in infrastructure, facilities, people, and the playing squad.
The debate around matchday ticket pricing is a contentious one, and it’s clear that fans are wary of being priced out of the action. Wrexham’s promotion brings new challenges, and it will be interesting to see how the club navigates this delicate balance.
