Manchester City’s star midfielder Jack Grealish was subjected to a chorus of boos from Celtic fans during their pre-season friendly defeat last week. But why did the Bhoys’ supporters give Grealish such a cold reception?
According to fans, the 28-year-old’s international allegiance was the main reason behind the boos. Grealish, who was born in Birmingham, has Irish heritage through his maternal and paternal grandparents. Traditionally, many Celtic supporters have Irish roots, with the club having a strong Catholic heritage. Some fans believe that Grealish’s decision not to play for the Irish national team may have sparked the reaction.
This isn’t the first time Grealish has faced criticism from Celtic fans. In 2021, he was subjected to abuse on social media after a disappointing performance for England against Scotland at Wembley Stadium. Grealish has since become a regular for the Three Lions, but it seems that his international past continues to haunt him.
Grealish has put in place a series of measures to improve his form at Manchester City after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign. He started just 10 of City’s 38 Premier League fixtures last season, a significant drop-off from the previous campaign where he played a key role in the team’s success.
City’s 4-3 defeat to Celtic in North Carolina was a close-run affair, with January signing Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn scoring twice for the Scottish champions. Despite the loss, Grealish will be looking to put the result behind him and focus on the upcoming season.
