Southampton Fans Left Baffled as Cameron Archer Misses Penalty vs Manchester United
It’s been a frustrating start to the season for Southampton, and things didn’t get any better as they took on Manchester United at St Mary’s Stadium. The Saints were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when debutant Tyler Dibling was fouled in the box, only for Cameron Archer to step up and miss the resulting penalty.
Andre Onana was equal to the task, making a solid save to deny Archer’s 12-yard effort. But what really caught fans off guard was the drama leading up to the penalty. Ben Brereton Diaz appeared to be lining up to take the penalty, only to step aside and allow Archer to take it instead.
The delay before the penalty was taken also raised eyebrows, with fans left wondering what was taking so long. Ultimately, it didn’t matter, as United cleared the ball and scored themselves just two minutes later through Matthijs de Ligt.
Things only got worse for Southampton as Marcus Rashford curled in a beautiful finish from 25 yards to make it 2-0 before halftime.
For Southampton fans, it was a nightmare passage of play that will have left them scratching their heads. Could they have taken an early lead and changed the course of the game? It’s a question that will be debated for weeks to come.
