Alan Shearer Warns FA to Stay Away from Newcastle Boss Eddie Howe
As the Football Association (FA) continues their search for the next England manager, a legendary figure has cautioned them to steer clear of one high-profile candidate – Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe.
Howe has been touted as a top contender for the England job, following his impressive work with the Magpies. However, according to Alan Shearer, his beloved club’s all-time leading scorer, the FA should "stay away" from the 46-year-old manager.
Speaking exclusively to us, Shearer expressed his admiration for Howe’s work at St. James’ Park, but emphasized the importance of loyalty to the club.
"I’m pretty sure of that, as good a job Eddie would do, no one at Newcastle would want to lose him to that because of the job he’s done," Shearer said. "Hopefully he can continue to do the job and finish off by winning a trophy with Newcastle. So in a way, I’m hoping that Lee Carsley does very well so that the FA stay away from Eddie."
Shearer’s words of caution come as the FA continue their search for a replacement for Gareth Southgate, who resigned following England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. The governing body has since appointed Lee Carsley as interim manager for upcoming Nations League fixtures, while they continue their recruitment process.
Interestingly, Carsley has emerged as the early favorite to land the job on a permanent basis. With his experience as England Under-21 boss, he knows many of the players in the current squad, and could provide a seamless transition.
Shearer, however, believes that the FA have made the right decision in appointing Carsley as interim boss. "I think it’s the correct decision that England have made, it gives them time to look at the bigger picture and weigh up their options," he said. "Gareth got the job in similar circumstances eight years ago – he did really well with the Under-21s and Lee has done exactly the same."
The Newcastle legend praised the FA’s willingness to give Carsley a chance, acknowledging that it’s a wise move in the grand scheme of things. "There’s a great opportunity for Lee to go in and do really well and then who knows, he might do really well and end up getting the job. Without doubt, he’ll be an option."
As the search for the next England manager continues, it’s clear that Eddie Howe’s future is far from certain. With Shearer’s warning, it’s likely that the FA will be forced to reconsider their plans. One thing is certain, though – the Three Lions are in need of a new gaffer, and it’s an exciting time for English football.
