The Premier League Wonderkid Who Turned Down Barcelona’s 10-Year Contract
John Bostock, a former Premier League prodigy, has opened up about the reason behind his decision to reject Barcelona’s offer of a 10-year contract. The 32-year-old midfielder, who has had a nomadic career, has shared his story with 90min, revealing the factors that led him to turn down the opportunity of a lifetime.
Bostock’s talent was spotted by Crystal Palace at a young age, and he became the club’s youngest-ever player at just 15. His impressive performances caught the attention of Barcelona, who made him a decade-long offer to join their ranks. However, Bostock and his family decided to stay in England, citing their desire to remain close to their roots.
"I’m a follower of Jesus, and I believe our steps are ordered," Bostock explained. "I was exposed to faith in my mid-teens, and so my relationship with God was my source throughout all the trials and tribulations and helped me mature very quickly."
Bostock’s decision to stay in England ultimately led him to Tottenham, where he was sent out on loan to several clubs before leaving on a permanent deal in 2013. He has since played in Belgium and France, currently plying his trade with National League outfit Solihull Moors.
The midfielder’s career has been marked by a series of loan spells and short-term contracts, but he has no regrets about the path he has taken. "I would have loved to have finished my career on the continent, but as you grow and you have a family, different priorities become your focus," he said.
Bostock’s return to English football in 2020 was a welcome one, and he has since spoken about the challenges of adapting to life away from the UK. "To be rooted in a home after so many years travelling is definitely a blessing," he said.
The former Premier League wonderkid will be remembered by some for his penalty-kick failings during Notts County’s eventual victory in the 2023 National League play-off final. Attempting to panenka his effort against Chesterfield, his shot came back off the bar before the Magpies eventually went on to win the tie and secure promotion to League Two.
