Ex-Man Utd player who only made 12 appearances for the club ‘keen’ to make shock Old Trafford return

United’s Defensive Dilemma: Sergio Reguilon Eyeing Surprise Return to Old Trafford

Manchester United’s summer transfer business has been a mixed bag, with some shrewd signings and others leaving fans scratching their heads. One player who could solve the club’s defensive woes is none other than Sergio Reguilon, a former Red Devil who’s keen to make a surprise return to Old Trafford.

Reguilon spent the first half of last season on loan at United, making 12 appearances, including four starts. However, his stay was cut short due to United’s anticipation of swift returns for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. But, as we know now, those returns never materialized. Shaw suffered a season-ending injury, while Malacia was out for over a year.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Reguilon is keen to rejoin United, having loved his time at the club. The Spanish left-back was happy with the tactical approach and the atmosphere at Old Trafford. Romano even stated that Reguilon would be eager to return if United came knocking again.

However, it seems unlikely that United will prioritize Reguilon over other targets. The club has been linked with Bayern Munich’s Noussair Mazraoui, who’s highly rated by Erik ten Hag. The Dutch coach believes Mazraoui can help unlock the potential of his former Ajax team-mate Antony down the right flank.

United’s defensive issues are well-documented, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka potentially departing and Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia not featuring in the pre-season tour. The Red Devils have spent £85 million on Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, but there’s still work to be done.

While Reguilon might not be the top target, his familiarity with the club and the league could be a major plus. He’s already proved himself in the Premier League and knows the United way. Perhaps, Erik ten Hag could take a chance on the Spanish left-back to plug the gap in his defense.
