England Manager Odds: Clear Favourite Emerges as Pochettino Takes International Job
Gareth Southgate’s departure has left the FA scrambling to find his replacement, with several big names linked to the vacant role. But with Mauricio Pochettino out of the running after taking the United States men’s national soccer team job, a new favourite has emerged.
Lee Carsley, currently in charge of the England Under-21s, has taken over as the clear favourite to become the next permanent England manager. Sky Bet have installed him at 11/10, putting him ahead of Graham Potter, who is 9/4 to get the job.
Pochettino’s departure is a huge blow to England’s chances of landing their top target. The Argentine boss had been touted as the FA’s number one choice, but ultimately decided to take the United States job.
But with Pochettino out of the running, Carsley has emerged as the leading contender. The 50-year-old has a wealth of experience in the game, having played for Coventry City and Birmingham City, before going on to manage West Bromwich Albion, Aberdeen, and the England Under-21s.
Carsley’s tactical acumen and ability to get the best out of his players have impressed during his time in charge of the Under-21s, where he led the team to victory in the 2023 European Championships, beating Spain in the final 1-0.
While Potter and Howe are still in the running, they come with their own set of risks and doubts. Potter has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea 16 months ago, and his appointment would carry significant risk. Howe, on the other hand, is still busy preparing for the new Premier League season with Newcastle United.
Klopp, who recently ruled himself out of the running, still has a 8/1 chance of getting the job, while Guardiola remains a long shot at 14/1. Frank Lampard, currently in charge of Derby County, and Ange Postecoglou, who has international experience as the coach of Australia, are both at 16/1 and 20/1 respectively.
