England Fans Unimpressed with Gareth Southgate and Players’ Medal Ceremony Behavior
Last night’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain was a bitter pill for English football fans to swallow, and things didn’t get any easier for them during the trophy presentation ceremony. England fans were left feeling disappointed and frustrated as Gareth Southgate and the players seemed to take their runners-up medals for granted.
Medals Left Unclaimed
After Spain’s victory, the England team didn’t exactly exude graciousness as they accepted their medals. Social media was filled with fans expressing their dismay at the players’ behavior, with many taking to Twitter to voice their opinions.
One fan said: "I know second sucks, but I seriously salute the England players who keep their medals on rather than immediately removing them. It’s still a big achievement and I think taking them off is just disrespectful tbh." Another tweeted: "Disgusting watching the England players take their medals off the second they receive them. So disrespectful and sore losers doing that."
Disrespectful Behavior?
It’s not the first time we’ve seen this kind of behavior from international footballers, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying. For fans who have been supporting their team throughout the tournament, it’s hard not to feel a sense of disappointment and betrayal.
As one fan commented: "England team aren’t the first to do it but I don’t like players taking their losers medals off as soon as they are presented to them." Another fan added: "How embarrassing it is to see the players take off their medals, they are role models for young football fans around the world."
A Silver Lining?
Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom for the England team. As midfielder Jude Bellingham pointed out in his post-match interview: "It’s really disappointing because at some point we do have to deliver, but there are experiences and there’s things we can take from this tournament going forward."
For fans, it’s about picking up the positives and learning from their mistakes. As Bellingham said: "I suppose if you look at everything negatively, nothing will ever change. So it’s important we pick the positives and the negatives together and find a way to one day get England over the line."
A Lesson Learned?
In the end, it’s up to Gareth Southgate and the players to learn from their mistakes and come back stronger next time. As fans, we can only hope that they’ll take the criticism to heart and strive to be better representatives of the England team.
