Drake Goes All-In on Canada’s Copa America Dream, Placing $300,000 Bet on Upset Win Over Argentina
Drake, the Canadian rapper known for his bold predictions and large bets, has done it again. This time, he’s put a massive $300,000 stake on his native Canada to upset the heavily favored Argentina in the Copa America semi-final.
The 37-year-old Grammy-winning artist took to Instagram to share the slip, captioning it: "This could get Messi". Canada, led by Jesse Marsch, has already beaten Argentina in the group stage, with Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez scoring the goals in a 2-0 win. However, Argentina, led by the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, will be looking to redeem themselves and secure a spot in the final.
Canada’s guaranteed to be in the third-place play-off at the bare minimum, and they’ll face Uruguay or Colombia in their next encounter depending on the outcome of the semi-finals. While Drake is known for having a "curse" attached to him when it comes to backing teams, he seemed to break the curse in December 2022 when he backed Argentina to win the World Cup final against France.
Messi and Argentina did indeed win the World Cup, but Drake lost his $1 million bet due to the match going to extra time and penalties. Nevertheless, the Canadian rapper is optimistic about Canada’s chances against Argentina, and he’s putting his money where his mouth is.
Drake’s massive bet has generated plenty of attention, with many wondering if Canada can indeed pull off the upset. The team has been in impressive form, and their recent victory over Argentina in the group stage will give them confidence going into the semi-final.
Can Canada defy the odds and beat Argentina? We’ll have to wait and see. But one thing’s for sure – Drake is putting his faith in his native team, and that’s a bold move indeed.
