Cristiano Ronaldo’s Unrealistic Ambition: Why He’ll Keep Playing Until His 40s
Cristiano Ronaldo is 39, and despite being at an age where many top athletes are hanging up their boots, the Portuguese superstar has no intention of retiring anytime soon. And when we say soon, we mean, like, until he’s in his 40s.
According to sources, Ronaldo’s motivation to keep playing stems from his desire to share the pitch with his son, Cristiano Jr. The youngster has already shown signs of inheriting his dad’s talent, with an impressive record in the Al Nassr youth team. And the kid wants to play with the big boy.
Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu recently spotted Ronaldo back in May, and claimed that the reason behind CR7’s reluctance to retire is indeed the prospect of playing alongside his son. And we’re not just talking about a casual kickaround – Mutu believes it’s entirely possible for father and son to play together professionally, at least for a half, within the next year.
Now, let’s put aside the notion that Ronaldo wants to prove himself as the fittest 40-year-old athlete alive. It’s understandable, considering he’s already set the bar for an absurdly high level of athleticism throughout his career. But the reality is that he’s human, and human legs (even Cristiano Ronaldo’s legs) are not built to withstand the punishment of elite-level football for too much longer.
And yet, Ronaldo continues to push himself to the limit. The dedication, the willpower – it’s awe-inspiring, but also quite frankly, a bit disturbing. Football fans love to see the "best of the best" compete, but should we be okay with seeing it at the expense of our safety and well-being?
Ultimately, Ronaldo’s decision to keep playing is a reflection of his competitive nature, but it’s also a reminder that some things are better left in the past. Should he truly be driven to extend his career until his 40s? Maybe, maybe not. One thing’s for sure, though – his fans will be there to cheer him on, every step of the way.
