Copa América Market Values: Romero & Ríos Shine, Bombito Soars 150%!

Copa América Market Values: The Winners and Losers

The Copa América has come to a close, and Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 32 players who stood out during the tournament. We take a look at the winners and losers, and what it means for their future in the transfer market.

The Big Winners

Colombia and Argentina have the three biggest market value winners in their squads. All three are defenders who play in the Premier League and have seen their values increase by €5 million. Daniel Muñoz, the Crystal Palace right-back, has seen his market value increase to €23m after scoring two goals and assisting once. Richard Ríos, the Palmeiras midfielder, has seen his market value double from €5m to €10m after being the most important midfielder in Colombia’s squad.

The Tottenham Duo

Meanwhile, only Ecuador managed to score from open play against Argentina, and the main reason for that record was the center-back duo of Tottenham’s Cristian Romero and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martínez. Romero’s market value increase makes him one of the ten most valuable defenders on the planet, with a new value of €65m.

The Canadian Breakthrough

For the Canadians, it was their first major success at a big international tournament. Two Canadian men’s national team players, Jacob Shaffelburg and Moïse Bombito, used the Copa América to announce themselves to a world audience. Shaffelburg saw his market value increase to 42.9% to €5m, while Bombito had an even more significant increase of 150%, from €1.8m to €4.5m.

The Eagle Group’s Interest

Bombito’s breakthrough moment was his tournament performance, and the Eagle Group is interested in signing the player. Indeed, the Eagle Group tried to sign Bombito ahead of the Copa from the Colorado Rapids and would still sign and move the player to first Botafogo and then Olympique Lyon.

James and Pellistri’s Upgrades

Colombian star James Rodríguez has long understood how to make the most out of tournament football. His market value was relatively low, so we decided to increase it by €1.5m to €5 due to the player’s outstanding performances and increased standing. Man United winger Facundo Pellistri also saw his market value increase, from €8m to €10m, after scoring one goal and one assist and being a big part of a Uruguay side that finished third overall at the tournament.

How Transfermarkt Market Values Work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market.
