Benteke Entering a New Phase of His Career, Finds Bliss in Relative Anonymity in Washington
In a candid chat, Christian Benteke shared his thoughts on his career, revealing he’s entering a new phase. The striker believes he’s matured and no longer craves the attention he once did. Instead, he’s embracing the anonymity in Washington and enjoying a "normal" life away from the spotlight.
"I used to want people to recognize me on the street, want my picture taken, and sign autographs," he explained. "But now, I know it’s just part of the job. I need to focus on scoring goals and winning games."
Benteke’s views have changed as he’s grown older and wiser. He’s come to realize that fame isn’t everything, and he’s happy to trade it in for a quieter life. In the US, he can train in the morning and then live a normal life, walking to the park or meeting up with friends without being mobbed for autographs.
This December will mark Benteke’s second Christmas in Washington. He’s looking forward to spending it with his family and kids. As someone who’s played at the highest level, he knows the demands of top-flight football can leave little time for personal life.
The 33-year-old keeps tabs on his former club, Aston Villa, and is thrilled to see them performing well in the Champions League. "A huge club," he gushes. "Villa was my first team in England, and to see them doing well is special."
Benteke’s international career appears to be winding down, with no call-ups to the Belgian national team since 2022. He doesn’t expect to be included in the next World Cup, either. "I’m still playing well, and I’m still a professional, so why should I retire from the national team?" he asks. "I’m not obsessed with it, and I’m not putting pressure on it. As long as I’m playing, I’ll leave the door open."
For now, Benteke is content with his lot, focusing on his club career and enjoying the freedom that comes with playing in the US.
