Chelsea’s £70m Star Fofana Reveals He Considered Shock Move Away from the Blues
In a recent interview, Chelsea’s talented young forward David Datro Fofana opened up about a potential move to Marseille, revealing that he had a tempting offer to join the French club over the summer. The 20-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2022 for a whopping £70m, has made a decent start to his Stamford Bridge career, playing 90 minutes in all three of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far.
Fofana’s potential departure would have been a major surprise, given his impressive displays for the Blues. But, as he revealed to Free Foot, he ultimately decided to stay put and focus on establishing himself in the Chelsea squad.
"Me, I would be lying if I said I didn’t weigh it up," Fofana confessed. "It was from [Mehdi] Benatia, Marseille’s sporting director. It touched me and I think everyone knows why."
With a contract at Chelsea until 2029, it’s clear that Fofana is committed to his current club for the foreseeable future. However, his Marseille roots and passion for Les Phoceens could always lead him to make a return to his hometown club in the future.
"The current objective is to succeed at Chelsea, to try and play regularly, and to establish myself at my club," Fofana emphasized. "But OM, we’ll see one day. I still have a contract until 2029 and we’ll see after that. I have never hidden it, [Marseille] is my city, my club, I am an OM supporter. We’ll see if I end up being at Marseille in a few years, or if I stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career."
Fofana’s decision to stay at Chelsea is a huge boost for the Blues, who will be hoping to see their young star continue to grow and develop in the years to come.
