Chelsea Eyeing Benfica Star Tomas Araujo in Last-Gasp Bid for Transfer Deadline Day Signings
Todd Boehly and Co. have been busy in the summer transfer market, bringing in the likes of Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and more. However, according to reports, the Blues are keen on making another signing ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline.
Their sights are set on Benfica center-back Tomas Araujo, with The Mirror claiming Chelsea have made an enquiry about the 22-year-old Portuguese defender. Araujo currently has an £85 million release clause in his contract, which could be a stumbling block for Chelsea.
Interestingly, fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace had a £25 million bid for Araujo rejected earlier in the month. Meanwhile, French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain are also rumored to be interested in the young defender.
Araujo has already caught the attention of top clubs in Europe with his impressive displays for Benfica, which suggests he could be an exciting signing for Chelsea. His height, aerial ability, and pace could bring a new dimension to the Blues’ backline.
It’s worth noting that Chelsea recorded a thumping 6-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend, and manager Enzo Maresca’s post-match comments highlighted the team’s ongoing development.
"I want to see my team play the way we want to play, and compete every game. This is the most important thing. I want to see on the ball a clear idea of what they want; and off the ball, a very aggressive team."
As we edge closer to the transfer deadline, will Chelsea be able to wrap up a deal for Araujo? It remains to be seen, but for now, the signs look promising.
