Claude Makelele’s Coaching Career Takes Another Twist
Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has left his role as Asteras Tripolis boss after just three matches, citing differences in philosophy and a lack of cohesion in the dressing room as the reasons for his departure.
Makelele’s stint at Asteras saw him enjoy a three-game unbeaten run, drawing two games and winning the third 3-1 away at Kallithea. However, despite the promising start, he has decided to cut ties with the Greek outfit, reportedly due to differences in the way the team operates on and off the pitch.
This isn’t the first time Makelele’s managerial career has taken an unexpected turn. His previous jobs have seen him manage PSG’s assistant manager role, Bastia, Swansea City, and Belgian side Eupen, but with varying degrees of success.
Despite his ups and downs, Makelele is known for his passion for coaching young players and helping them develop their skills. In a recent interview, he spoke about his work with Chelsea’s youth teams, saying: “I was coaching them individually, making them understand the way they are supposed to play, and that will let their quality come through.” He also cited the example of Trevoh Chalobah, who broke into Chelsea’s first-team as a defender after being convinced by Makelele to try playing in a new position.
Makelele’s next move is unclear, but it’s expected he’ll return to his native France in the coming days. As he searches for his next opportunity, he’ll be looking to learn from his experiences and bring his unique coaching style to a new team.
