Chelsea get outclassed, Real Madrid so-so in Mbappé’s LaLiga debut, more

Monday Musings: A Look at the Premier League and Beyond

Hey there, football fans! It’s your boy Gab Marcotti here, and I’m back with my weekly musings on the beautiful game. Today, we’re diving into the Premier League, as well as some other top leagues across Europe.

Manchester City Dominates, Chelsea Struggles

The big story of the weekend was Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Chelsea. Pep Guardiola’s side looked a class apart, with Erling Haaland bullying his way past Marc Cucurella for the opener. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s new boss Enzo Maresca struggled to get his team going, with Raheem Sterling omitted from the squad.

City’s victory was expected, but the bigger question is how Maresca will turn things around at Stamford Bridge. The Italian has a tough task ahead of him, with a squad that’s been disrupted by the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and a need to trim the squad to improve the bottom line.

Other League News

In Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain sent out a young lineup in their opener against Le Havre, but it was a close-run thing until the cavalry arrived in the second half. Milan drew with Torino, despite taking the lead twice, while Napoli were thrashed 3-0 by Verona. Antonio Conte took the blame, saying he felt ashamed, which is nice to see some accountability.

Mason Greenwood and the Controversies

Marseille’s Mason Greenwood scored twice in their 5-1 win over Brest, but coach Roberto De Zerbi should avoid talking about how his performances can "calm the controversies" surrounding him. The "controversies" relate to facts off the pitch, and it’s depressing if all you have to do to "calm them" is be good at your job.
