Chelsea Fans Left Fuming After Europa Conference League Defeat, Demand Defensive Reinforcements
It’s been a summer of upheaval at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea bringing in a host of new players to bolster their squad. However, it seems that the Blues’ backline is still a major concern for the fans, who are crying out for defensive reinforcements after a dismal performance in the Europa Conference League.
Enzo Maresca’s side slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Swiss outfit Servette, with Christopher Nkunku’s penalty and Jeremy Guillemenot’s equaliser handing the visitors a 3-2 aggregate win. While the result wasn’t a major shock, the performance was, with Chelsea’s defense looking vulnerable and uncertain at times.
Footage of the match has done the rounds on social media, and fans are not happy with what they’re seeing. The likes of Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashille, two of the summer signings, have been particularly criticized, with many calling for them to be replaced.
"Disasi and Badiashile leaving before the deadline wouldn’t be a bad thing for me," wrote one fan. "We need defenders who can actually defend, not just play pretty passes."
Another fan echoed the sentiments, saying: "Chelsea wanting to sell Chalobah when Badiashile is literally the worst defender Chelsea have ever signed in the club’s history is laughable."
The criticism is not limited to individual players, however. Many fans are questioning the overall quality of the defense and the lack of reinforcements in that area.
"It’s one thing being good on the ball, but you need to be able to defend," wrote a third fan. "We need a quality defender in, and we need one quickly. HUGE question marks on all three of Disasi, Tosin, and Badiashille."
With the transfer window set to slam shut on Friday, the clock is ticking for Chelsea to address their defensive concerns. Will they make a move to bring in a top-class defender, or will they rely on the players they have? Only time will tell.
