Bruno Fernandes Shows His True Colours with Classy Response to Controversial Sir Jim Ratcliffe Decision at Man Utd
Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph over Manchester City was a much-needed silver lining to an otherwise disappointing 2023/24 season. But behind the scenes, the club was dealing with some controversy courtesy of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision to cut back on staff perks for the big game.
As reported, Ratcliffe’s email to staff outlined that they would only receive one ticket for the FA Cup final and would have to pay £20 for coach travel to and from Wembley Stadium on the day of the game. This was a far cry from the luxurious treatment staff were used to, with the club covering travel, food, and accommodation in the past.
But one person who wasn’t happy with this decision was Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder, who has been a key player for the Red Devils since his transfer in 2020, took matters into his own hands and offered to pay for everything – and for everyone – out of his own pocket.
According to a post by Kieran Maguire, Fernandes approached the club with his offer, but was "rebuffed" as the club didn’t want him to make them look bad. This is a shame, as Fernandes’ gesture would have been a wonderful gesture of goodwill and a great example of leadership.
Fernandes has been a reliable and consistent performer for Manchester United, making 223 appearances across all competitions and scoring 79 goals. He’s a fan favourite and a leader on the pitch, and his decision to offer to pay for staff perks out of his own pocket is a testament to his character.
It’s a shame that the club didn’t accept his offer, as it would have been a great PR move and a way to show appreciation for the hard work of the staff. Instead, it’s left fans feeling disappointed and disillusioned with the club’s priorities.
