Alan Shearer Blasts France’s Ousmane Dembele After Spain Defeat – “Wasteful and Disappointing”
Euro 2024 has seen its fair share of shocks and surprises, but France’s early elimination from the tournament is a major storyline. Despite being one of the favorites to lift the trophy, Les Bleus couldn’t overcome the Spanish onslaught in a 2-1 defeat.
On BBC, Alan Shearer – a former England striker – voiced his frustration with France’s performance, singling out Ousmane Dembele for criticism. “I was getting frustrated and angry up here myself so you can imagine how they were feeling out there on the pitch,” he began. “There was just a complete lack of energy and quality from him tonight.”
Dembele, who started on the bench, was introduced in the second half but failed to make an impact. Shearer’s scathing verdict was that Dembele “was probably more guilty than anyone in terms of being wasteful when he got into good positions.”
It’s safe to say that Dembele didn’t exactly cover himself in glory last night. He missed several half-chances and his deliveries were often wayward. While others, like Kylian Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani, did their part for France, Dembele’s misfires ultimately proved costly.
Perhaps the most galling aspect for Les Bleus fans was that France had taken the lead through Muani’s 31st-minute strike. However, Spain’s counter-attacks eventually paid off, as 16-year-old Lamine Yamal scored a stunning winner – his first international goal – with four minutes remaining.
Shearer echoed the sentiments of many, describing the team’s performance as “disappointing”. “There was just a complete lack of energy and quality from him [Dembele] tonight,” he stated. “When you’re in that position, you have to be expected to do better than what he’s done – he had plenty of guys in there and he kept hitting crosses straight at the keeper.”
