Brentford branded ’embarrassing’ for what they did on Ivan Toney’s return to the club

Ivan Toney’s Hero’s Welcome Back to Brentford Met with Controversy

Brentford’s star striker Ivan Toney has returned to the club following his campaign with England at Euro 2024, and the reception he received from fans and teammates alike has been met with controversy. The 28-year-old was greeted by manager Thomas Frank and the first-team squad, and a video of the moment was posted on Brentford’s X account, accompanied by the caption: "Good to have you back, Ivan!"

However, rival fans online have been slamming the way Brentford welcomed their main man back to the club. One X user wrote: "Embarrassing," while another added: "Ffs you’d think he’s won the World Cup the way he’s being treated." A third user said: "Honestly, who tf is clapping him?" and another questioned: "Why is everyone cheering?"

Toney’s hero’s welcome is understandable, given his impressive performances for England at the tournament, where he set up Harry Kane for the Three Lions’ winner against Slovakia and converted an ice-cold penalty in their victorious shootout against Switzerland. However, the excessive celebrations and applause have led to backlash from some fans.

As a key player for Brentford, Toney has been the subject of intense transfer speculation this summer, with Manchester United, Tottenham, and West Ham United linked with making a move for the star forward. Despite this, manager Thomas Frank remains confident that Toney will be back with the Bees for the start of the new season.

"What I’m focusing on is that Ivan [Toney] is a Brentford player and I’m very happy that he’s here," Frank said. "If he’s here when we start the season, I would be over the moon. I’ve said before we’re a selling club but what I know is that Ivan is a player for us."

Toney has been with Brentford since the summer of 2020, scoring 72 goals in 141 games across all competitions for the club.
