Just days after helping Spain lift the European Championship trophy, Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal has been given a well-deserved 21-day break, ruling him out of the club’s preseason tour of the United States.
The 17-year-old forward made a huge impact at Euro 2024, setting up the first goal in the final and earning himself the Young Player of the Tournament award. Yamal’s impressive displays, which included one goal and four assists throughout the tournament, have earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting young players in Spain.
With Barcelona’s first team fixture against Manchester City in Orlando coming up on July 30, Yamal will miss the opportunity to get some game time under his belt, but his break will allow him to recharge ahead of the new campaign.
Yamal’s rise to prominence at Barcelona has been swift, with the forward making 50 appearances for the first team last season, the second most of anyone in the squad. He’s also been rewarded with the number 19 shirt, previously worn by the legendary Lionel Messi.
The young Barça star will return to training on August 7, ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Monaco on August 12. The Catalan club will then kick off their LaLiga campaign on August 17 with a trip to Valencia.
Other members of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad, including Pedri, Fermín López, and Ferran Torres, will also miss the US tour, although for differing reasons.
