Gareth Southgate’s Left-Wing Back Conundrum: Will Luke Shaw Start Against Netherlands?
England manager Gareth Southgate has a tough decision on his hands as he prepares to face the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semi-final. With Luke Shaw finally back in the fold, there’s a strong case for the Manchester United defender to start at left-wing back. However, according to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Shaw is expected to remain on the bench, with Kieran Trippier set to keep his place.
Shaw’s return from a four-month injury layoff was a welcome boost for England, and he made a positive impact during his 12-minute cameo against Switzerland. However, Southgate has doubts over Shaw’s ability to complete the full 90 minutes, which could see Trippier retain his spot.
"I’m very fortunate to have a fabulous group of players, and we’ve always worked as a team," Southgate said in a recent press conference. "Luke has been injured for four months, so it wasn’t a possibility to play earlier, but [against Switzerland] he made a good contribution. He gives us balance with the team, but Kieran has done a fantastic job."
Trippier has been a stalwart for England in recent years, and his experience in big games could be a deciding factor for Southgate. The Atletico Madrid right-back has played in numerous important matches for his country, and his defensive prowess could be crucial against a Dutch team that’s known for their attacking flair.
So, will Shaw start at left-wing back, or will Trippier keep his place? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – Southgate has a tough decision on his hands.
