Sesko Rebuffs Premier League Suitors, Chooses to Stay at Leipzig
Benjamin Sesko, the 21-year-old Slovenian striker, has made a bold move by signing a one-year contract extension at RB Leipzig, putting an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his future. The deal will keep him at the Red Bull Arena until 2029.
After scoring 18 goals in all competitions for Marco Rose’s side last season, Sesko became one of the most sought-after players in Europe, with several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal, expressing interest in his services. Chelsea were even prepared to trigger his €65 million release clause.
However, despite the temptation of playing in England, Sesko has opted to stay in Germany, citing the club’s ambition and his own desire for growth as the main reasons for his decision.
"It was a tough decision, but I’m glad I made it," Sesko told Nogomania in an exclusive interview. "I wanted to stay at Leipzig because I believe it’s the right place for me to grow as a player. The club’s vision is clear, and everything is geared towards progressing and achieving high goals."
Sesko was also asked about his conversation with Leipzig coach Marco Rose, who gave him his full backing to make a decision based on his feelings.
"We talked, and he said he wanted me to stay, but he also said if I felt I needed to move on, I should go," Sesko revealed. "He’s an excellent coach who has led many great players, and I’m glad I decided to stay."
The Slovenian international also opened up about how he dealt with the transfer rumors, saying: "I can’t deny that rumors didn’t get into my subconscious, but I remained calm and focused on the job at hand. I’m glad I was able to block out the distractions and approach the Euro with a clear head."
While Sesko’s decision may be a blow to Premier League fans who were eagerly anticipating his arrival, it’s clear that he’s prioritized his own development and the ambition of RB Leipzig.
What’s next for Sesko and Leipzig?
With Sesko committing to his future at Leipzig, all eyes will be on the club as they look to build on their impressive run in the Bundesliga and Champions League. Can they challenge for silverware in the coming seasons? Only time will tell.
