It’s been a while since we’ve seen Ben White don the Three Lions jersey, and it seems like that drought might continue. The Arsenal defender hasn’t been named in an England squad since December 2022, and with interim boss Lee Carsley set to announce his latest selection, it’s looking unlikely that White will make a comeback anytime soon.
White has had a tumultuous relationship with the FA, with reports suggesting that an exchange with then-England assistant Steve Holland during an international camp led to a rift. The issue allegedly centered around a "question of respect afforded to the player," which has left fans and pundits alike scratching their heads.
For those who may have forgotten, White did receive a phone call from the FA informing him that he would be named in an England squad – a moment that left him overwhelmed with emotion. Speaking to Sky Sports, he recalled: "I got a phone call, got told the news. I was out for dinner – I didn’t really believe it! Yeah, I just sat and cried for an hour – I couldn’t really believe it. I don’t think it’s settled in yet."
However, that phone call was a long time ago, and since then, White has been absent from the England fold. The Telegraph reported that Arsenal sporting director Edu even called Southgate to inform him that White would not be available for selection.
So, what’s going on with White and the FA? It’s hard to say, but one thing is certain – the defender’s relationship with the national team is complicated. With Carsley’s 100% record as interim boss, it’s unlikely that White will be given a chance to redeem himself anytime soon.
