Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka "Upset" After Being Dropped by Vincent Kompany
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Bayern Munich squad, midfielder Leon Goretzka has been brutally axed by manager Vincent Kompany, leaving him "upset" and desperate to prove himself back in the starting lineup.
The 29-year-old German international, who has made 222 appearances for the Bavarian giants since joining from Schalke in 2018, was shockingly omitted from the squad for the club’s 6-1 thrashing of Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel.
Goretzka also missed the DFB-Pokal 4-0 win over SSV ULM 1846, with his lack of playing time being a cause for concern for the usually consistent midfielder.
Director of sport Max Eberl revealed that the decision was made due to the immense competition for places in midfield, stating that Pavlo Aleksandar Pavlovic, Joao Palhinha, and Joshua Kimmich have been performing exceptionally well.
"This is part of life in football," Eberl said, speaking to Bulinews. "When Leon is ready to face the situation, he’ll be treated normally. We’ve said that when Leon is there and ready, he’ll be treated normally."
Despite being dropped, Goretzka’s impressive track record with the club, having netted 40 goals and provided 46 assists in his six years, means that he remains an important member of the Bayern squad.
In fact, Kompany has hinted that Goretzka could be utilized in a more defensive role, starting alongside Eric Dier in defense for a 4-0 friendly win over Grasshoppers. The move would not only provide more options for the team but also provide Goretzka with a new challenge to thrive in.
With Bayern leading the Bundesliga standings and enjoying a perfect start to the season, the German powerhouse will be keen to ensure that their midfielders stay fit and in form throughout the campaign.
As we look ahead to the weekend’s fixtures, Goretzka will be working tirelessly to prove his doubters wrong and earn back his place in the team.
