The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States and is awarded by the President of the State to individuals who excel in their field and ‘make America a better place.’
Despite arriving in the country a few years ago, Messi’s name has increasingly cropped up in White House offices and outgoing President Joe Biden has named him as one of 19 people to receive the honor this year.
After winning the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and then the Copa America once again last year, Messi has really taken to the game and is enjoying being with his former Barcelona teammates at Inter Miami.
Last season, he scored 21 goals and 11 assists for his team while playing alongside the likes of Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez in MLS and he hopes he can continue that next season.
Notably, he will take part in the Club World Cup later this year, a competition for which Barcelona itself has not qualified.
