Teen Sensation Lamine Yamal: Breaking Free from Messi’s Shadow
The football world has been abuzz with the rapid rise of Barcelona and Spain’s 17-year-old star, Lamine Yamal. And, rightly so. In an exclusive interview with Antena 3, Yamal addressed the constant comparisons to the six-time Ballon d’Or winner. "I like that they compare me to the greatest player in the history of football, but I want to be myself," he said. "Reaching Messi’s level is impossible."
The youngster’s sentiment is understandable. At just 17, Yamal has already achieved more than many players do in a lifetime. He became the youngest scorer in LaLiga history last October, and then went on to help Spain win the 2024 European Championship title. Additionally, he set a new record as the youngest player to feature at a Euro, taking the field against Croatia in the group stage.
Yamal’s connection to Messi goes back to his childhood. A 2007 photo shoot with the Argentine superstar when Yamal was just six months old may have seemed like a mere coincidence, but it ultimately laid the foundation for his rapid rise to fame.
"I like to think that Messi passed along some of his powers to me," Yamal joked. "I still have a lot to give."
The future looks bright for Yamal, who scored a stunning equalizer in the semifinal match against France, setting the stage for Spain’s title win over England. With a transfer fee valued at €120 million, Yamal is an attractive commodity for top clubs. However, he seems keen to stay at Barcelona, the club he’s been associated with for most of his life.
"I don’t want those €120 million because then I would have to leave Barça," he said. "I hope I never have to leave. I want to be a legend."
