Barcelona’s Transfer Troubles: Why Nico Williams Move Looks Unlikely
It’s been a summer of frustration for Barcelona fans, with the club struggling to bring in new signings. And things don’t look like they’re about to get any easier, with Nico Williams’ move to the Nou Camp looking increasingly unlikely.
According to sources close to the club, Barça’s top target, Williams, is wanted by Paris Saint-Germain, who are willing to wait until he becomes available. The Athletic Club winger, 22, has been a key player for Spain as they won Euro 2024, and it’s no surprise that bigger clubs are circling.
Why the Hold-Up?
So, why can’t Barça just pay the €58 million ($62.73 million) release clause? The answer lies in LaLiga’s spending limits. Barça are still in excess of their imposed spending limit and need to bring in cash through transfers or new revenue streams before they can splash the cash.
Dani Olmo: The Alternative?
One potential solution could be Dani Olmo, who is open to a return to the Catalan club. The versatile forward is valued at €60 million ($64.89 million), but Barça are hoping to agree a much lower initial fee with RB Leipzig, with the rest made up in performance-related add-ons.
Transfer Window Update
With Ronald Araújo ruled out due to injury, Barça’s hopes of strengthening their squad this summer are dwindling. But, with Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha keen to stay and fight for their places, there’s still all to play for.
