Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana Aims to Conquer Spanish with Coach Unai Emery’s Help
As Aston Villa prepares for their maiden Champions League campaign, the club has made a statement signing in midfielder Amadou Onana. The Belgian international joined Villa Park this summer for a club-record fee of £50 million, replacing Douglas Luiz who was sold to Juventus.
Onana, who is just 22 years old, has already impressed with his skills on the pitch. But what’s even more remarkable is his language skills – he can speak five languages, including Wolof, French, German, English, and Dutch. And now, he’s set his sights on learning a sixth language: Spanish.
"I’ve asked Unai Emery and his staff to speak to me in Spanish so that I can answer in Spanish," Onana revealed in an interview. "I love Spain and go there at least once a year. It’s a beautiful language and it would be nice to be able to speak it more fluently."
Given that Villa has a number of Spanish-speaking staff, Onana believes it will be easier to learn the language with Emery’s help. And with the coach’s guidance, Onana is confident that he can improve his Spanish skills.
Education is also a huge priority for Onana, who was raised by his hard-working mother in a household of 14 family members. His mum, who gave up her career as a physio to emigrate to Belgium when Onana was 11, instilled in him the importance of education from a young age.
"My mum raised three kids on her own, which couldn’t always have been easy, but she made the best of it," Onana said. "Football-wise, I didn’t have the opportunities you have here in England. I just played football in the street. But mum was always big on education, schoolwork always came first."
Onana’s dedication to his studies is evident, and it’s clear that his mum’s influence has had a profound impact on his life. With his strong work ethic and language skills, Onana is poised to make a big impact on the pitch for Aston Villa.
