Arsenal’s Title Hopes Hang in the Balance: Two Players Who Could Cost Them the Premier League Crown
Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title has been a thrilling spectacle in recent seasons, with the Gunners finishing as runners-up to Manchester City in the last two campaigns. However, former West Ham United and Portsmouth goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has cast a shadow of doubt over their chances of going one better in the coming season.
In an exclusive interview with CaughtOffside, Hislop pinpointed two players in particular who could cost Arsenal the title: Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. While both players have shown glimpses of brilliance, Hislop is not convinced they have what it takes to lead the team to Premier League glory.
Havertz’s Goal Return a Concern
Havertz, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea for £65 million last summer, made 37 league appearances and scored 13 goals. While these numbers are respectable, Hislop believes the German international is still finding his feet in English football.
"I am just not sold on Havertz as a striker to lead a team to win the Premier League," Hislop said. "He’s a great player, but I think he needs to take his game to the next level if Arsenal are going to seriously challenge for the title."
Jesus’s Lack of Goals a Cause for Concern
As for Jesus, the Brazilian striker scored just four league goals in 27 matches last season. Hislop is equally unimpressed with the forward’s output, suggesting he is still adjusting to the demands of English football.
"I feel the same about Gabriel Jesus, who I felt started wonderfully well when he first joined Arsenal," Hislop said. "But he’s struggled to find consistency and has not been able to produce the goals Arsenal need to win the Premier League."
Arteta’s Search for a Solution
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is under no illusions about the need to strengthen his attacking options this summer. The Gunners have been linked with Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, among others, but whether Arteta will be able to lure one of these players to the Emirates remains to be seen.
"We still need to address that department," Hislop said. "Arteta is right, margins are really thin, especially when you consider just how good Manchester City continue to be. Arsenal need to make a statement in the transfer market if they’re going to seriously challenge for the title."
