Arsenal on the Verge of Marquee Signing as Club President Spotted in London

Mikel Arteta is closing in on his top target, with Real Sociedad’s president spotted in London for negotiations.
Arsenal have been relatively quiet in the transfer market this summer, but it seems like the Gunners are about to make a statement. The club has been linked to a number of midfielders, including Spain international Mikel Merino, and it appears that Arteta is close to getting his man.
According to reports, Real Sociedad’s president Jokin Aperribay flew to London for talks with Arsenal chiefs, indicating that the two parties are close to reaching an agreement. The Spanish club’s goal is to sell Merino for around €40 million, which is significantly higher than the €25 million they initially wanted.
Merino has been a key player for Real Sociedad, making 25 competitive appearances for the club last season. The midfielder also impressed for Spain during the European Championship, featuring in all seven of their matches and scoring a dramatic late winner in their quarter-final win over Germany.
Arsenal have been looking to strengthen their midfield for some time, and Merino would be a huge coup for the club. The 25-year-old’s ability to control the tempo of the game and pick out a pass would be a huge asset for Arteta’s side.
