Arne Slot’s Decision to Sell Liverpool Star Would Be a Mistake
As Liverpool’s pre-season preparations kick off, Reds fans are bracing themselves for a potential shock exit of one of their young stars. Reports suggest that Arne Slot is set to sanction the sale of 22-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg, with PSV Eindhoven and Stuttgart reportedly interested in snapping him up.
But fans are in uproar at the thought of letting Van den Berg go, citing his impressive performances on loan at Mainz and his potential to become a world-class defender. One Twitter user wrote: "Calling this now but selling him is gonna be a mistake he’s going to be a world beater." Another added: "Give him a chance, he has good season in the Bundesliga."
So, is selling Van den Berg a mistake? In our opinion, yes. The young defender has already shown glimpses of his quality on loan at Mainz, making 33 Bundesliga appearances and establishing himself as a solid player. At just 22, he still has plenty of room for growth and development, and Liverpool would be doing themselves a disservice by cashing in on him now.
The potential sale of Van den Berg is all the more surprising given Liverpool’s struggles at the back last season. With Virgil van Dijk still recovering from injury and Joel Matip’s inconsistent form, the Reds could do with having a reliable and young defender to complement their experienced trio.
PSV Eindhoven are reportedly willing to pay around €20 million for Van den Berg, but it’s unclear if Liverpool are willing to let him go for that price. One thing is certain, though – if the Reds do decide to sell Van den Berg, they’ll be doing so at their own peril.
