ARGENTINA SACKS GARRO OVER MESSI ROW: Sports Undersecretary Axed for Demanding Apology

Argentina Govt Fires Sports Undersecretary Over Racist Chants Controversy

In a shocking move, the Argentina government has fired Sports Undersecretary Julio Garro over his demand for an apology from national football team captain Lionel Messi for racism chants controversy during the Copa America celebrations.

Garro, who was appointed just three months ago, sparked controversy after demanding an apology from Messi for his role in the racism scandal that emerged during the Copa America win. The incident involved Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez and his teammates singing discriminatory chants towards French players.

An Instagram video shared by Fernandez caught international attention, featuring derogatory and racist lyrics, including a derogatory verse targeting African footballers. The video sparked outrage, with France Football Association (FFF) president Philippe Diallo challenging FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Argentina Football Association president Claudio Fabian Tapia to respond to the remarks.

While Garro initially refused to apologize for his remarks, he later backed down and said he would resign. Argentina President Javier Millei’s Office announced the decision, citing the need for unity and against discrimination.

Messi has remained silent on the matter, sparking mixed reactions from fans and pundits alike.

"Offending anyone was never my intention, and that is why I have offered my resignation, although I will always be on the other side of discrimination in all forms," Garro said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the FFF has lodged a complaint with FIFA over the video and slammed the racist chants, while French defender Wesley Fofana publicly criticized Fernandez, saying that "uninhibited racism is disgusting."

Chelsea FC, the team that signed Fernandez for a record fee last year, has also issued a statement on the matter, condemning the racism and acknowledging an internal disciplinary procedure.

"It was never my intention to participate or support such behaviour, I want to assure everyone that it won’t happen again," Fernandez posted on his social media account, issuing a public apology.

The fallout continues, with the Argentina Football Association (AFA) still refusing to comment on the matter.
