A Shock Premier League Club Wants Antony in January – Here’s the Latest
When the transfer window slammed shut earlier this year, one thing was clear: Antony was on the chopping block at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag’s lack of faith in the Brazilian was evident, and many assumed it was only a matter of time before he got shipped out.
But in a stunning twist, caught offside is reporting that Newcastle United is ready to pounce on Antony come January. And it seems that Eddie Howe is keen to bring him in as a replacement for Anthony Elanga, who might be off to Nottingham Forest instead.
The numbers are already stacked against Antony at United. He’s yet to start a single game this season, with just one cameo appearance under his belt. Last season, he managed a paltry three goals in 38 games across all competitions. If Newcastle is willing to stump up £40 million to get him, you’d think United would be hard-pressed to turn them down.
And yet, Ten Hag remains skeptical of Antony’s potential. The United boss recently admitted that Antony hasn’t shown what he’s capable of lately, despite having "big potential". That’s high praise, coming from a manager who worked with the Brazilian at Ajax.
"I know what his talent is, and it’s about proving his talent, and it’s about him," Ten Hag said. And if Antony can’t convince him otherwise, you wouldn’t blame Newcastle for pouncing.
For United, a £40 million payday might be a tempting option, especially given the Brazilian’s struggles. With Amad Diallo returning from injury and Omari Forson doing well, there are plenty of alternatives waiting in the wings.
So will Newcastle make the move in January? We’ll be keeping a close eye on developments. Stay tuned!
