On Thursday night, Amad Diallo became the first Manchester United player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Cristiano Ronaldo almost three years ago.
United’s modern talisman did not score a late first goal until the dramatic clash with Southampton reached the 82nd minute. Amad’s initial effort was quickly thwarted by Kyle Walker-Peters, but the ball bounced well for the Ivorian, who fired the second effort past Aaron Ramsdale.
Amad fired United in front for the first time of the night in the 90th minute, combining with Christian Eriksen to hook a volley beyond the former Arsenal goalkeeper. As Old Trafford erupted in unison, a collective feeling of shock and awe pervaded the spectators ready to celebrate victory after a largely disappointing display, the club’s familiar keeper completed his treble in stoppage time.
Not only was it the first hat-trick of Amad’s senior career – doubling his Premier League tally of eight goals for the season in just a second-half minute – but it was United’s first top-flight treble since Ronaldo. Delivered the goods against Norwich City in April 2022.

There were 34 Premier League hat-tricks scored by 22 unique players for 14 different clubs between United’s two previous entries. Erling Haaland single-handedly collected eight match balls – including one in the Manchester derby.
This is not a modern phenomenon.
Like most statistics, which are partly positive, Manchester United’s number of hat-tricks has declined since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. The Red Devils won that year’s title with three goals from Robin van Persie against Aston Villa, but it did not happen. Enter another top-flight treble by June 2020, when Anthony Martial achieved a rare pocket of good form during the visit of Sheffield United.
Bruno Fernandes completes a quartet of players who have scored a hat-trick since Ferguson’s Premier League debut for United. Six different players have scored a hat-trick against the club in the same time frame, including a trio of goals from Romelu Lukaku in Ferguson’s spectacular farewell match.
