Shearer’s Stinging Response to Bournemouth’s Disallowed Goal vs Newcastle
The Premier League’s latest controversy has left many scratching their heads, and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has given his two cents on the matter. The Magpies drew 1-1 with Bournemouth, with the Cherries having a goal disallowed in the dying minutes of the game.
The incident saw Dango Ouattara head the ball into the net, but VAR intervened, ruling it out for a "factual handball" by the Bournemouth forward. The decision sparked fury among the home fans, and Shearer took to Twitter to express his opinions.
"A lucky point as that’s an awful decision re hand ball. Never hand ball for me," Shearer tweeted. When challenged with the claim that it "clearly hit his arm," Shearer responded, "That clear the ref didn’t give it."
The debate surrounding handball decisions has been ongoing in the Premier League, with many questioning the inconsistency and clarity of the rules. The IFAB’s Laws of the Game for 2024/25 state that for the purposes of determining handball offences, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. However, the main debate is where exactly the ball hit Ouattara before going into the back of the net.
The decision means Bournemouth have picked up two points from their first two Premier League matches with a pair of 1-1 draws. Newcastle, meanwhile, are on four points, having beaten Southampton 1-0 at St James’ Park last weekend.
