Pep Guardiola Sends Strong Message: Manchester City Ace is Off-Limits This Summer
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has made it clear that one player will not be leaving the club this summer. After a successful Community Shield win over Manchester United, Guardiola revealed that James McAtee is off-limits.
The 21-year-old playmaker made his first official start for City on Saturday and impressed fans with his energetic display. Guardiola praised McAtee’s ability to operate in small spaces and attack the final third.
"[James] McAtee has this ability [to operate in small spaces]," Guardiola said. "It is difficult to find players with a sense of goal in small spaces who attack the final third and McAtee has that quality."
Guardiola wants to keep McAtee at City due to his unique skillset, which sets him apart from other academy graduates. The Catalan coach believes McAtee’s experience at Sheffield United, where he earned promotion to the Premier League before suffering relegation, will greatly benefit him at City.
"He is a player who came from the academy, he knows all the processes and how he moves in the pockets," Guardiola explained. "His period at Sheffield United helped him a lot to give value and suffer to get points, physicality, win duels, this kind of stuff that normally they don’t do in the City academy. It helped him a lot playing there."
McAtee’s performances have caught Guardiola’s attention, and the coach has high hopes for the young midfielder. While City may not make any more signings this summer, McAtee’s talents will undoubtedly be a key part of the team’s plans.
