Bruno Fernandes Sets the Record Straight After Manchester United’s Community Shield Defeat
Manchester United’s Community Shield defeat to Manchester City was a tough pill to swallow, but Bruno Fernandes has been quick to deflect any talk of excuses. Speaking to MUTV after the game, the Portugal international was adamant that their loss was not due to any player coming back from holiday or lacking fitness.
"I think it was for both sides," Fernandes said. "They also had some players who just came back. That was not the issue. It wasn’t about not being fit enough – everyone has been working."
The Red Devils had taken the lead on 82 minutes, only to see Bernardo Silva equalise just seven minutes later. However, their hopes of winning the trophy in a penalty shootout were dashed as City emerged victorious, converting seven of their spot kicks while United managed just six.
United’s squad has been affected by various absences, with several players participating in international tournaments during the off-season. Rodri, Kyle Walker, Phil Foden, and John Stones were all part of the Euro 2024 final last month, while Lisandro Martinez featured in the Copa America final. Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo and Martinez started the game, despite their recent international exploits.
However, there were still positives to take from the match for Erik ten Hag’s side, who will now look to build on last season’s seventh-placed finish in the Premier League. United’s squad is still adapting to the manager’s tactics and playing style, but signs of improvement are evident.
The Red Devils are back in action on Friday when they open their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Old Trafford. With a new season ahead, Fernandes and his teammates will be looking to put the Community Shield defeat behind them and focus on achieving a top-four finish.
