Gary Lineker Names the England Star Who Could Become a Match of the Day Pundit Post-Retirement
Gary Lineker has revealed the England international who could become a Match of the Day pundit after hanging up their boots.
Lineker, the current presenter of MOTD, made the prediction during his Rest is Football podcast, specifically pinpointing James Maddison as a top contender.
“I would definitely suggest a player who didn’t quite make the final squad but did make the big squad and that would be James Maddison. I think he talks as well about the game with intelligence as any current player,” Lineker stated.
Maddison is widely regarded as one of the standout talents in the current England crop and his articulate nature has endeared him to fans and pundits alike. Who knows, maybe he has a future in the commentary box too.
Lineker’s co-host on the podcast, Micah Richards, agreed with the assessment but slightly differed in his choice.
I’d agree with that. Kyle Walker has done bits and pieces hasn’t he, he’s sat down with me, you’ve done an FA Cup game… But I think I’m going for Declan Rice, I think he always comes across very likeable, knows the game very well, and he’s hard-working, so yeah, I’d go with Declan Rice.
For completeness, Lineker also threw Lukaski Saka’s name in the ring further down the line, although co-host Richards joked that such lucrative endorsement deals might overshadow the appeal of pundit work!
