Manager in ‘pole position’ to take charge of England for Ireland and Finland games next month

England on the Hunt for a New Boss: Lee Carsley in Pole Position

As the Three Lions begin their Nations League campaign next month, it’s official – Gareth Southgate has bid farewell to his eight-year tenure as England manager. But, who’s next in line to take the reins?

For now, it seems Lee Carsley, the England Under-21s coach, is in the driving seat. According to The Telegraph, Carsley is "in pole position" to take interim charge of the senior team for their September fixtures against Ireland and Finland.

Under-21s Coach, Lee Carsley, is set to take the reins for England’s Nations League campaign, pending the recruitment process for a permanent boss. Should he get the nod, his first match as interim boss will be against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.

So, what’s the lowdown on Carsley? A former midfielder himself, Carsley has impressed in his short stint as Under-21s coach. Last summer, he won the Euros with an Under-21s team featuring Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon, both of whom were part of Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

Gareth Southgate’s departure leaves a gaping hole in the England coaching set-up. Several big names have been linked to the vacancy, including Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, and even Mauricio Pochettino. However, Carsley’s name is now firmly in the frame.

Carsley’s Under-21s side has enjoyed remarkable success, and his familiarity with the senior team’s players could prove an advantage in his interim role.

In the meantime, the FA are on the hunt for a permanent replacement for Southgate. With the likes of Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino reportedly interested, the competition for the top job is set to be fierce.
