Manchester United’s Midfield Revamp in Full Swing: Five Names Identified as Potential Targets
After recent reports suggested that Manchester United have prioritized Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte for a summer transfer, it’s looking increasingly likely that the Red Devils won’t be making a significant spend on the Uruguayan midfielder. According to Sky Sports, United have set valuations for their desired targets and are unwilling to budge from them, which has led them to scout alternative options.
One name that’s emerged as a surprise target is Burnley’s Sander Berge. United officials have made contact with Berge’s camp, and the 23-year-old Norwegian midfielder has impressed with his ability to control the tempo of games with his exceptional passing range and box-to-box energy.
Berge might not be the only player that United are considering, however. Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who impressed for Spain at this summer’s European Championship, are also believed to be on United’s radar.
Meanwhile, in a twist, it seems that United are still considering keeping midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who joined the club on loan from Fiorentina in June. Amrabat was unable to nail down a regular spot in the starting lineup, starting 15 out of 30 appearances. Despite a promising end to the season, Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prade has revealed that Amrabat wants to stay in the Premier League. United paid £8.5m to take Amrabat on loan with an option to make the deal permanent for £21.4m.
Given these developments, it’s clear that Manchester United have a clear plan in place for rebuilding their midfield. With Berge and company in the mix, United may find themselves with a strong array of midfield options come the new season. Whatever the outcome, one thing’s certain – the Red Devils won’t rest until they’ve built a unit worthy of competing with the league’s best.
