MLS All-Star Captain Luciano Acosta Makes History Again
The much-anticipated MLS All-Star Game between the best of Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX’s top stars took place at Lower.com Field, the home of the reigning MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew. The match boasted a record-breaking crowd, and fans played a crucial role in selecting the MLS All-Star Captain through the MLS All-Star Captain Fan Vote presented by Captain Morgan.
Luciano Acosta, the FC Cincinnati attacking midfielder, wore the special captain’s armband designed by Captain Morgan and Columbus artist Adam Hernandez. This marks the second consecutive time Acosta has captained the MLS All-Star side, a testament to his fans’ admiration and respect. The armband represents the spirit of the game, the vibrancy of Hernandez’s culture, community, and love for the sport.
The MLS All-Star Captain Fan Vote allowed fans to have a significant say in the selection of the honorary captain, making them an integral part of the All-Star game. By participating, fans not only supported their favorite players but also became a part of the game itself.
Four players received the most captain nominations from the first round of ballot casting. In the end, Acosta emerged victorious, beating out Lionel Messi, Cristian Arango, and Cucho Hernandez to claim the captaincy. Repeating as MLS All-Star Captain is a remarkable achievement, and his leadership on the field was evident.
The match itself was a tightly contested affair, with Monterrey’s German Berterame scoring the opening goal in the 16th minute. However, the MLS All-Stars responded quickly, with Diego Rossi assisting Cucho Hernandez to level the score. The hometown fans were ecstatic, chanting Hernandez’s name and celebrating his equalizing goal.
Despite a VAR-ruled penalty overturned, the Liga MX All-Stars regained the lead through a stunning goal from Oussama Idrissi. The second half saw MLS head coach Wilfried Nancy make several changes, including bringing in Riqui Puig, Federico Bernardeschi, Hany Mukhtar, and Denis Bouanga. However, Liga MX’s defense held firm, and they doubled their lead with quick goals from Juan Brunetta and Maximiliano Meza.
LAFC’s Hugo Lloris was caught out on both occasions, leaving the MLS All-Stars with a mountain to climb. Despite Riqui Puig’s effort striking the crossbar, the Liga MX All-Stars held on for a 4-1 victory.
