Anthony Gordon Names the Toughest Premier League Away Ground – And It’s Not Anfield!
Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has caused a stir with his surprising choice for the toughest Premier League away ground to play at. In an interview with Fubo, the 23-year-old Magpies star revealed that it’s not Anfield, his childhood club’s iconic stadium, that provides the biggest challenge, but rather the Emirates, Arsenal’s home turf.
Gordon, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool, praised the atmosphere at St James’ Park, his current stadium, but admitted that the Emirates takes the cake when it comes to difficulty for away teams. "As an away player, St James’, no question about it. But for me being a Newcastle player, I would say the Emirates," he said.
So, what makes the Emirates so challenging? Gordon believes it’s the hostile atmosphere and the Gunners’ well-organized defense. "I think it’s just the way they press, they’re very clever at it. They’re a well-organized team, and they make it hard for you to get the ball and have a shot on goal," he explained.
Gordon’s choice has sparked debate among football fans, with some agreeing that the Emirates is indeed a tough away ground, while others claim that Anfield or other stadiums provide a more daunting challenge. In the same interview, Gordon revealed his footballing idol growing up was Steven Gerrard, but he surprisingly chose his former manager Frank Lampard ahead of Gerrard in the central midfield debate. "I think Frank Lampard is the better midfielder, just because of his vision and his passing range. He’s a very clever player," he said.
When asked which player he would sign for Newcastle if given the opportunity, Gordon didn’t hesitate. "I’d have to go Kevin De Bruyne," he replied, praising the Belgian midfielder’s exceptional passing ability. "I think I’d get a lot more one-on-one chances just from his special ability to play through passes."
Gordon also named Mo Salah as the best player he has come up against in his career. "Directly against, I would say Achraf Hakimi for PSG. He was definitely the best right-back, but on the pitch, I’d probably say Mo Salah," he said, acknowledging the Egyptian forward’s incredible ability.
