Suárez Battles On Despite Knee Issues: Martino Provides Update
Inter Miami’s Luis Suárez has been a revelation for the Herons this season, bagging 12 goals and five assists in the MLS regular season. But, as we all know, great players often come with a price – in this case, an inflamed knee that’s been causing him pain.
In a post-match interview after Inter Miami’s 2-0 win over Puebla in the Leagues Cup, head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino revealed that Suárez’s knee issues are more serious than initially thought. "It’s a knee that he works on permanently, week by week," Martino explained. "There are days that are better, there are weeks that are not."
This isn’t the first time Suárez has spoken about his knee problems. During his time with Gremio, he revealed he was suffering from osteoarthritis in his right knee and even considered retiring due to the injury. Despite these issues, Suárez has remained a key player for Inter Miami, and his goal against Puebla was a welcome sight for the Herons’ fans.
So, how does Martino plan to manage Suárez’s knee going forward? "Well, [I substituted him in the 85th minute] because this situation where your knee can become inflamed is not something that has only just occurred," he said. "Maybe there were other instances you didn’t even know about it. Now we had to say it publicly because he did not go to the All-Star Game, but it is a knee that he works on permanently, week by week."
It’s clear that Martino is taking a cautious approach with Suárez, but you can’t help but feel that the 37-year-old legend is a vital part of Inter Miami’s plans. With the Herons looking to defend their Leagues Cup title, they’ll need Suárez to be at his best if they’re to lift the trophy again.
