Graeme Souness Slams Bruno Fernandes, Suggests Manchester United Captain Lack Leadership Qualities
Ex-Liverpool captain and renowned pundit Graeme Souness has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, questioning the Portuguese international’s leadership qualities.
Speaking on the latest episode of William Hill’s Three Up Front podcast, Souness reflected on Fernandes’ performance for the Red Devils, citing a notable example from a 7-0 defeat to Liverpool a couple of seasons ago.
"When you look at leaders in the modern game, one example is at Manchester United, which is one of the biggest institutions in world football," Souness began. "The club captain is Bruno Fernandes. When they were 3-0 down against Liverpool a couple of seasons ago, he just threw the towel in. He’s the captain! If anything, he should still be contributing, running around with enthusiasm, and helping his teammates."
Souness argued that Fernandes’ body language on the pitch often suggests a lack of enthusiasm and willingness to take responsibility for his teammates’ performances.
"I don’t think Fernandes can change that aspect of himself – it’s part of him. When he’s shrugging his shoulders and throwing his arms around, that’s just him," Souness said.
The former Scotland international believes that modern-day leaders in the game often hide behind a lack of accountability and responsibility.
"I think leaders in the modern game tend to hide. They don’t want to put themselves out there, be held accountable, or stand up and take the blame," Souness lamented.
Fernandes’ antics have often irked fans and pundits alike, and Souness’ comments are likely to spark debate around the Manchester United captain’s role as a leader on the pitch.
