In a recent Q&A session in New York, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola faced a fan who called out for more "flair" in football. This comes on the heels of Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa’s comments about the sport becoming "less enjoyable" due to its commercialization.
Bielsa’s remarks sparked a heated debate, with some accusing Pep Guardiola of prioritizing systems over creativity. During his Q&A session, Guardiola was asked about "flair" players, and a fan interrupted, asking, "What happened to flair players? People tell me you have to pass, pass, pass. Like, they blame you [for it]." Guardiola’s response? "They blame me? That’s good, yeah blame me. No problem."
But is Guardiola really to blame for the lack of flair in modern football? The Spanish tactician has always emphasized the importance of movement and positioning over individual skill. As he once said, "Move the opponent, not the ball. Invite the opponent to press. You have the ball on one side, to finish on the other.
